Old School Friday #1

Ms Grapevine and MarvalusOne have teamed up to create a meme titled Old School Friday and since I love my classic R&B I had to sign up to join. If you want to join in the Old School Fun then go HERE for the guidelines.

So here is my contribution to Old School Friday - Minnie Ripperton! Enjoy!

Background information: Minnie Ripperton
The tragic 1979 death of 31-year-old Minnie Riperton silenced one of soul music's most unique and unforgettable voices -- blessed with an angelic five-octave vocal range, she scored her greatest commercial success with the chart-topping pop ballad "Lovin' You." Riperton was born in Chicago on November 8, 1947. diagnosed with breast cancer, she underwent a mastectomy in 1976, later becoming a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society and earning a Society Courage Award from then-President Jimmy Carter. Riperton continued performing despite her declining condition, with 1979's Minnie the final record completed during her lifetime -- she died in L.A. on July 12 of that year.

MrsGrapevine 22 February, 2008 09:14

Yes, and she has a famous daughter that we know as Maya Rudolph on Saturday Night Line, who is also a gifted singer.

I love Minnie Ripperton, thanks for taking me right down memory lane.

MrsGrapevine 22 February, 2008 09:16

I said all that to say, listen to the last words of the song, "Maya, Maya, Maya"

So this particular performance is dedicated to her (Maya Rudolph). How sweet to have this memory of your mom!

I wrote a post with her video last year for Valentine's Day. Girl if this isn't old school. Love it! :D

Did you know about her daughter Maya Rudolph from SNL?

Oh, and my husband and I watch "Everybody Loves Raymond" reruns and Ray was singing that song to his wife. Too funny!

Have a great weekend!

This is an absolutely beautiful song. I remember listening to my dad play his bass guitar to Minnie Ripperton music when I was growing up.

Great video Regina.
