Old School Friday #7 Theme- "1971"

You Know What It Is!!!!
It is...FRIDAY!! Which is my favorite day of the week because I get to post my "Old School Friday" Picks! In case you are new around these parts and don't know what "Old School Friday" is, well it is grown folks MUSIC! Yes we post some music that comes from some time before 2000, hopefully to relive some memories, and to educate or just entertain each other.
Ms Grapevine and MarvalusOne have teamed up to create a meme titled Old School Friday and since I love my classic R&B I had to sign up to join. If you want to join in the Old School Fun then go HERE for the guidelines.
Last week Ms Grapevine and Marvalus One decided to add a little twist to Old School Friday. That twist is that now they are assigning a Theme, Artist, Era, or Genre. So the theme for this OSF is ...1971! That's right we are posting songs from 1971! So join in and post a 1971 song or just visit the participants and enjoy the music!!
Here are the other "Old School Friday" participants:

- Electronic Village - Chatting Over Cocktails -

- Ms Grapevine -Quick -Marcus LANGFORD

- Cassandra - Danielle -Lisa C

-Chocl8t - DP - Kreative Talk

-MarvalusOne - Regina - LaShonda

-aj -Invisible Woman

-Rosemarie -sHaE-sHaE

I Love Old School Friday so much that I have decided to supply three selections, [Since 1971 was such a good year for "soul" music , think Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, etc I decided to go in a different direction!] And they are:

John Denver - Take Me Home Country Roads (I Love John Denver!)

The Carpenters - Superstar

The Carpenters - Rainy Days And Mondays

Happy Old School Friday!!
Peace & Love!

I love The Carpenters (esp. Karen).

Great picks!!

ShAĆ© - ShAĆ© 04 April, 2008 09:15

OK I can't lie. I'm lost. :(

Regina 04 April, 2008 09:56

@ Cassandra - yes Karen was very talented...and tragic.
@ Shae - Just embracing my "OTHER" side!

I love music, GOOD music! Black, White, Big Band Swing, Country, Jazz, a little Calypso!!

When I was a kid we took a cross country road trip from NYC to LA to visit my aunt & cousins, half way across the U.S. there was no radio reception, there was no more black music! but after a while all we could get was country! You should have seen this car full of black people singing John Denver's Country Roads at the top of their lungs! it was great! I had the best childhood ever!! And I love John Denver to this day!
I was also a Fresh Air Fund kid and spent most of my summers (and some Holidays) with a white family in Ashland Pennsylvania, it was AWESOME! The only downfall was that Mary Ann did not know how to do "black" hair!! I may post a pic one day! So my diverse personality started as a child!

So this is your exclusive insight into the mind of Regina!

Peace & Love!

Karen Carpenter had one of the most beautiful, crystal clear voices I've ever heard.

I can't listen to her voice because she makes me want to cry especially considering how she died.

I love what Luther (May he RIP) did with his re-make of "Superstar."

I remember eharing John Denver say "far out" and laughing. He died tragically as well.

Country Road, take me home, to the place, I belong, W. VA Mountain Moma, take me home, country road.

Thanks for the memories Regina.

Villager 04 April, 2008 11:05

I've never been much of a fan of the Carpenters or John Denver. Although I did get a kick out of the Oh God! movies that John Denver put out later in his life with George Burns...

peace, Villager

aj

I never bought the music but I did enjoy some of their songs. I like her voice.

I love the way he sings "Virgina," lol; nice pick

Invisible Woman 04 April, 2008 16:53

Wow. You really brought something different this week Regina...love it!

I remember when I was very young hearing these songs on my parents AM car radio...I love those songs to this day. It was a time when blacks and whites loved and listened to black and white songs.

Talk..to..Grams 04 April, 2008 17:17

Hi!! Karen brought the computer home last night and I just hope it stays fixed this time!!! I have missed you!! Love and Hugs Grams

Shelia 04 April, 2008 18:11

Love the Carpenters, John Denver, not so much.

If I've sang "Rainy Days and Mondays" once, I've sang it a thousand times. I still find myself singing The Carpenters songs all the time. Just timeless.

MrsGrapevine 04 April, 2008 18:36

That was a twist, I was expecting something different. I can honestly say I don't know any of these songs.

I like the Carpenters, but I don't know these songs.

MsMarvalus 04 April, 2008 18:43

Way to go, Regina!

Something new, something different...

DP 04 April, 2008 21:21

Regina - My wife loves Karen Carpenter although I've never really been able to get into it.

I understand the "other side" thing though, having lived in a majority non-minority (as in hardly any) city for some of my formulative years. I'm sure it'll come out in some of the music choices I make as we go along.

Rozella 05 April, 2008 08:02

Hey Regina, was just passing by and OMG! This is such a great idea! I love it. :) The Carpenters rule!

Rosemarie 05 April, 2008 14:53

Thanks for sharing more about how you came to appreciate other genres and your fun road trip. Oh, and please post more on your Fresh Air Fund Kid experiences hair and all. ;)

John Denver was talented and the Carpenters hits are timeless and heartfelt.

I thoroughly enjoyed your selections this week.

What's next week's theme?

mama meji 05 April, 2008 18:09
