Old School Friday #36 "One Hit Wonders"

Hi There Bloggers!!
You Know What today is... Old School Friday!
In case you are new around these parts and don't know what "Old School Friday" is, well it is grown folks MUSIC! Yes we post some music that comes from some time before 1999, (hopefully) to relive some memories, and to educate or just entertain each other.
Ms Grapevine and MarvalusOne have teamed up to create a meme titled Old School Friday and since I love my music I had to sign up to join! To join in the Old School Friday Fun go Here for guidelines.

The theme for this week ,

"ONE - HIT WONDERS"

Here are the other "Old School Friday" participants:

- Electronic Village - Fresh And Fab - Danielle - Kim

-Beleiver 1964 - Cooper - SJP -Bria - BklynQueen 86 - Hey Shae -

- From the Battlefield - Thembi - D Spot - Malcolm -

-Pop Art Diva - Pjazzypar - MsLadyDeborah -

I had a lot of different songs that I pulled for this theme but they all seemed a little to easy and to much of the obvious pick. I decided to dig a little deeper and pull up something that I am about 95% sure no one else would post!! (Vanilla Ice was waaayyy to easy!) Enjoy!!

This song has been heard at sporting events and in movies ("Remember The Titans") but sadly I never even heard the name of the group until last night...
Steam - Na, Na, Hey, Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye [1969]

Soft Cell (Marc Almond) - Tainted Love [1981]

And lastly for comedic relief, this is one of the lowest, low budget videos I have ever seen!
Junior - Mama Used To Say [1982]

Have a great weekend!!

Listening to the first two I am still stump. I don't know either song or group.

Now, Junior that was the song. I got my daughter singing it. I still like listening to it.

SjP 24 October, 2008 09:23

Great picks! I love Remember the Titans!

Hope you get a chance to stop by SjP's for one of my favority One Hit Wonders.

Very fun picks. We sing that Steam song during football games to this day!

This is the second week in a row that I think we've picked the same song. Get outta my head girl!

Happy OSF!

Great Picks! I remember them all - well. Na Na Na Na, is still embedded in pop culture. Junior - funny!

pjazzypar 24 October, 2008 10:41

What can I say, great minds think alike. I haven't heard that Junior song since forever. Great choices.

Happy OSF! The first song is still popular in many college football stadiums on Saturday! The second song I've seen twice in my OSF romps today. Those were the first two times I have ever seen 'em! The last one is still a cult classic...

Thank you for visiting my 'One-Hit Wonder' post today. I invite your blog readers to check out 'Ready for the World' if they have time or inclinaton. I'm proud to say that I never wore a jheri curl back in the day ... how about you?

peace, Villager

Marcus LANGFORD 24 October, 2008 13:27

iriegal 24 October, 2008 13:44

I know all the songs and I have to say my favorite is MAMA USED TO SAY. I even bought the album...shhhhhh..don't tell nobody..lol

Hagar's Daughter 24 October, 2008 14:31

Everyone knows Steam's song, but nobody knows the group's name. Now we do.

Have a great weekend.

Hey Shae! 24 October, 2008 17:45

Steam will go down in the one hit wonder hall of fame next to Whoomp There It Is.

Tainted Love got lots of airplay. I still like it.

But Jr. takes the cake. "And Mama used to say... take ya time young man..." *snapping my fingers*

MsMarvalus 24 October, 2008 20:02

Excellent picks once again, Ms. Regina!

Hey it's Amy Shipp 24 October, 2008 20:04

I have danced to Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" many times! Good memories... :D

LaKeshia (Kreative Talk) 24 October, 2008 20:12

Mama Used To Say...great choice! Happy OSF!

Dori 25 October, 2008 03:53

I love this song by Junior. I recently found it on an 80s compilation CD here and I play it like it is the 80s all over again lately. LOL. All great picks!

melanie 25 October, 2008 15:21

I didn't know the last song but I remember the first 2. Fun songs!

Malcolm 25 October, 2008 21:09

Back when I was a kid, I assumed that Steam was a Black group. It's because "Na, Na, Hey, Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye" got a lot of airplay on the R&B station in Flint and the group had a bit of a soulful sound as well. "Remember the Titans" is one of my favorite sports movies.

I'm glad to see Junior getting some love... you are the second person to use "Mama Used To Say" as a selection for this week's OSF.

By the way, it's a good thing you didn't choose Vanilla Ice because he was a two-hit wonder. His follow-up to "Ice Ice Baby" was "Play That Funky Music", which peaked at #4.

Believer 1964 26 October, 2008 03:32

Steam had it goin' on with this tune, but what's with the hairdos and outfits? I know...it's 1969!

Your last pick was on a list of one-hit wonders that I searched through. I'm still clueless! ;)

bluedreamer27 26 October, 2008 08:16

i love tainted love
as far as i remember Elvis Presley also had a version of that song
great pick of songs regina
i love old school music woohoo

ktales 26 October, 2008 10:11

I've heard all three on the radio, but never got to see the video of any of them. I'm glad that I was too young to be able to remember the original mtv. The videos were awful :)
