Good News Tuesday

Good Morning Friends!
I am trying to get back into a regular blogging swing here! School work is so time consuming, on some days I feel as if life is passing me by! But I am confident that in the long run all this HARD WORK, LONG HOURS, HUNDREDS OF TEXT BOOK CHAPTERS, and NUMEROUS PAPERS & ASSIGNMENTS will eventually pay off........ right???

So Anyway! I am part of a "little" group called the "AFROSPEAR" which is described as "A group for any person of African descent who owns and operates a blog". The Afrospear is involved in a meme called "Good News Tuesday". This meme is to combat the onslaught of continual bad, depressing, dismal, and otherwise discouraging news about the African American society that floods the airwaves. so on Tuesdays we (The Afrospear Bloggers) blog about any good news effecting or instigated by African Americans.

So today I am highlighting 2 stories that I find interesting and which impact the African American community.

News item #1 -
On Monday President Barack Obama signed into law the "Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act"! This new law will help to combat childhood obesity by providing funding for schools to provide better school meals. Schools will have the funding to provide a more nutritious menu which includes adding more leafy greens, fresh fruits, whole wheat breads and whole wheat pasta. Though this news is not only inclusive of African American children, it is a great step for low-income children who may not receive well balanced and nutritious meals at home. According to BlackAmericaWeb.com, the secretary of education Arne Duncan said, "The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act makes the most significant investment in the national school lunch program in more than 30 years,”. News item #2 (Not really news but more of an interesting fact) -
This morning while listening to the radio (while getting ready for another LONG day!), I heard Tom Joyner talking about the little known Black History fact of the day. This is what I found out...
Dr. Herbert Charles Smitherman, Sr.
March 23, 1937 - October 9, 2010

Dr. Herbert C. Smitherman was the first African American person WITH a Doctorate hired by Proctor & Gamble in the 1960's. Dr. Smitherman held a Ph.D in physical organic chemistry from Howard University. Dr. Smitherman was an executive AND professional chemist at Proctor & Gamble. OK, so this is all very nice but the truly interesting part is... According to BlackAmericaWeb.com,
"Dr. Smitherman developed a number of incredibly popular patents, including Crest toothpaste, Safeguard soap, Bounce fabric softeners, Biz, Folgers Coffee and Crush soda". WOW!!! Now I don't know about you but I never knew this! RIP Dr. Herbert C. Smitherman, who died October 9, 2010. Dr. Smitherman, we thank you for your contributions to the African American community AND to the World! Read more about Dr. Smitherman HERE!

Happy "GOOD NEWS" Tuesday!

Regina,
I am very glad to see you taking a moment to support this weekly meme. I was very happy to see our First Family at the signing ceremony yesterday for the school meals program. Well done!

re: Dr. Smitherman. His son is a former Cincinnati city council member who is currently the president for the local NAACP branch. He has done a lot to make the NAACP more relevant in the greater Cincinnati area.

I invite your blog readers to visit my Good News Tuesday post about a young brother is being recognized for doing some remarkable things as a scientist. I'm a tireless advocate for getting more of OUR youth engaged in science, technology, engineering and mathematics so that they are relevant for the 21st century. You will learn about a sho' nuff role model with my post this week!

peace, Villager
