Bullying In The 21st Century

I do not know when it happened. I do not know why it has become so prevalent. I do not understand why it is a national phenomenon. When did BULLYING become such an epidemic???
Bullies have always been around and almost everyone has had an encounter with one on some level. Either you saw someone get bullied, you got bullied OR you were (are) a bully. So, bullying has been part of our nature and history for some time. I remember getting chased home from school by a bully. This boy chased me for about 5 blocks from my school P.S. 224 all the way to my building. He finally caught me right when I got to the building and beat the snot out of me. His name was Todd and he was the lunch Lady's son. We eventually became friends but I still remember that beating.

However this generation has taken bullying to extraordinary new heights. Children are KILLING THEMSELVES over bullying! We now have CYBER BULLYING, DOMESTIC BULLYING, POLITICAL BULLYING, all in addition to regular bullying. Technology has made bullying even easier.
What can be done to stop this phenomenon?

Even social networking platforms like facebook have addressed the bullying topic with the following posts.

A15-year-old girl holds hands with her 1-year-old son. People call her a slut no one knows she was raped at 13. People call another Guy fat. No one knows he has a serious disease causing him to be overweight . People call an old man ugly. No one knew he had a serious injury to his face while fighting for our country in the war. People call a woman bald but they don’t know she has cancer .Re-post this if you are against bullying and stereotyping.

The Girl you just called fat? She has been starving herself & has lost over 30lbs. The Boy you called stupid, he has a learning disability & studies over 4hrs a night. The Girl you called ugly. She spends hours putting make-up on hoping people will like her. The Boy you just tripped. He is abused enough at home. There is a lot more to people then you think.
I leave you with this video.

Although I'm saddened and appalled by such behavior, I am not surprised and I don't think it will ever stop. As the youngsters say "this is a new day, a new time." GOD HELP US ALL.

Yes, we've always had bullies but there was usually just one we all had to deal with - one child who had never been taught basic human kindness.

Entitled children being raised without respect for others, without a sense of empathy and with pure selfishness are the numbers that swell this epidemic.
