Stop Complaining, It Is Not Always About Racism!

This is old news and I purposely waited a while before I blogged about it so that I would not just be another voice in the vast sea of voices talking about the subject. I am talking about the Martin Luther King Jr memorial statue.
Just in case you went for a 3 hour tour, got ship wrecked, and have been living on an uncharted island and have no clue what I am talking about... I am referring to the 30 foot tall Statue of Martin Luther King Jr. This statue sits in Washington DC in between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. The monument is a 30 foot tall likeness of Reverend Martin Luther King Jr, standing with crossed arms, coming out of what appears to be the side of a mountain. The statue has of course like everything else in life caused a stir of controversy. The statue had black people all up in arms (just like EVERYTHING else, if the world successfully eradicated hunger, strife, drugs, corruption, and poverty, black people will still find something to complain about). I have read complaints such as...
Why is the sculpture made of Chinese granite?
Why is the sculptor Chinese?
Why is the sculptor not a black person or a person of color?
Why is the sculpture placed facing the Jefferson monument when Jefferson owned slaves and was known for raping his slaves?
Why was the statue constructed in China and then shipped to America?
People even complained about a quote that was paraphrased on the monument, most notable was Maya Angelo who thinks the quote should be changed no matter the cost! Really?? No Matter The Cost?? Seriously?? SMH!
Yes, and the questions go on and on and on.

I personally was not in favor of spending MILLIONS of dollars on a statue when there are BILLIONS of Americans hungry, homeless, uninsured, uneducated, jobless, and destitute. I have problems with folk willing to go all out to worship & praise a statue of ANYONE! But that is just me & my personal opinion!

Maybe some folk would have been satisfied if the statue was placed not in Washington DC amongst other great statues, but instead in the middle of an urban city. Perhaps on a block sandwiched between the liquor store and the local AME Zion church, facing the super Wal-Mart.

So the memorial statue is near Jefferson's monument and Jefferson owned slaves... So what? A lot of people owned slaves! Presidents who are on our money owned slaves, are we not wanting that money now?? Lincoln did not own slaves HOWEVER, he did have negro maids and a cook. Lincoln also had friends and family who owned slaves and yet he still visited their homes.

People need to get over this nonsense! Yes racism is alive, well and rampant in America, but guess what EVERYTHING is NOT always about race! If there was no MLK monument folk would cry racism. There is a MLK monument and people are still yelling racism. This means to me that no matter what goes on in life people will ALWAYS cry RACISM!!

Yes, the lead sculptor Lei Yixin was Chinese. However, the executive staff for this project was all black. The design team was lead by Deryl McKissack, PE, PMP, of McKissack & McKissack. McKissack and McKissack is an African American, woman owned architecture and construction company. Other key personnel and participants of this project were people of color.

I may be wrong but, Is it really that serious?? Well, I guess for some it really is, I just do not share the opinions because there is so much more going on in life that affects me personally, that nonsense like this is nothing but background noise! What it all comes down to is, Martin Luther King Jr. is dead and his dream has not yet become a reality because we have not made it so! Let's focus on that, not on all the other distractions.

Do something that makes a difference in the lives of those you love today!
