Natural Hair, Don't Care! Lessons Learned!

Natural Hair.... Natural Hair .... Natural Hair! Yes it is like a chant or a war cry. People are going crazy because of natural hair. For some it is a phase, for some it is a craze, for others it is a fashion statement, for some it is a statement of individuality, and for some it is simply a necessity. But no matter what the reason Natural Hair is here to stay! I am having some issues with Natural hair people and perceptions.

I DO NOT like when people assume things about natural hair based on media.... or just based on ignorance and small minds. You may ask, "What kind of assumptions"?? Hmmmm, let me see. Stupid things like being Natural makes you Political. Being Natural makes you Militant. Being Natural makes you Bourgie.
Lesson #1 - DO NOT assume anything about me based on my hair!

I also HATE that EVERYBODY AND THEIR MAMA have the best product for you! News Flash - PEOPLE WILL TRY TO SELL YOU PRODUCTS!!! Natural hair has proven to be BIG business, and lots of folks are trying to cash in at OUR EXPENSE! The funny thing about this is that years ago in the 70's people were not going BROKE trying to buy every product they saw on TV. Folks were using hair grease, VO5, conditioner, and going on about their business! And we all KNOW there were some high powered Afros back then! So why is it necessary to sell me 20 different types of product? Why is it necessary to classify the type of curl I have? Why do I have to read the labels on hair products looking for the right type of oil, enzymes, nutrients, etc?? TOO MUCH!! Stop peddling your wares this way! You do not have to buy Miss Jessie, Jane Carter, Kinky Curly, Oyin's Handmade, Carol's Daughter, or Organic Root Stimulator to have Fabulous looking hair!
Lesson #2 - You DO NOT have to buy tons of product for your Natural hair!

Question? Why is EVERYBODY a Natural hair EXPERT??? Man, the number of Natural hair websites, tutorials, and YouTube videos on twisting, banding, twist outs, braid outs, up-dos, etc is TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL!! I do not want to join another Natural Hair site, or subscribe to another YouTube channel about natural hair!
Lesson #3 - Having Natural Hair DOES NOT make you an expert or doctor of the Naturalisticness of Ethnic Hair!! (Yes I made that word up!!)

To Summarize:
I want you all to know that EVERY hairstyle is not for EVERY person! EVERY hair product is not for EVERY person! EVERY person with Natural hair is NOT an expert! And Please remember that what works on the next person MAY NOT work for you! What looked good on the Internet, on the next person, and in the magazine, MAY NOT look good on you!
Be an INDIVIDUAL, not a Natural Hair Clone!

Snaps Up Regina!

I am so feeling this post.

I have worn a natural since the late Sixties. I only use shampoo, conditioner and Royal Crown on my hair.

People need to chill out and stop trying to be the natural hair police.

Great Post!

You have always been such a militant. lol You make me laugh sometimes. You should be a natural hair expert since no chemicals touched your hair until you were 16. You managed to care for and style your hair without "Expert" input for years. lol lol

Well said Regina. I had a eye opener last weekend. Basically every product on the market is the same. There was a firestorm about using grease is a nono, now everyone uses grease. When i started my journey, I paid the price, now I really do not care about the next best product. Everyone is trying to make a dollar off not only naturals, but we as African Americans. If you do not mind I will like to share this on Natural Healthy Hair.

LOL! I think people with natural hair need to read this, because nearly every person I know with natural hair (with very few exceptions) fit into the stereotypes you listed.
