As a previous Head Start worker, a previous Childcare worker, and as a Grandparent of a five and two year old I watch a LOT of Nick Jr. Sometimes I feel as if my darn head is about to explode! I absolutely HATE a large majority of the shows on that station and on Nickelodeon and on Disney! But I must say some of the songs are very catchy!
I really like the sign language lady! she for some reason always seems to capture my attention! Her name is Rachel Coleman and she sings songs and uses sign language between some of those (annoying) children's shows! One day while watching her I wondered why she wore those colored band-aids on her fingers. I pretty much figured it had to do with the sign language so I Googled it to find out the 411! (Yes, I sometimes Google random things just for the heck of it!) I found Rachel Coleman's story to be very interesting (in a trivial sort of way) which of course means I like her even more! (This is NOT a new story, I just find it very interesting!)
People complain on a regular basis about EVERYTHING! People complain about clothes, jobs, material things, and everything else. HOWEVER, Rachel Coleman was dealt a blow that is one of a parent's WORST fears. She had a special needs child. Her and her husband discovered that their oldest child (Leah) was profoundly deaf. The Folk/Rock singer quit her singing career to learn sign language and teach it to her daughter. She later developed a television show with her sister Emilie Brown titled "Signing Time!" as well as a production company titled Two Little Hands Productions. Signing Times produces sign language DVDs, CDs, and videos. The show Signing Time purposes to teach American Sign Language to children ages one through eight. A few years later another blow to the Coleman family struck. Their second child was born with cerebral palsy and spinal bifida. Doctors feared that the second daughter (Lucy) would never talk, BUT she eventually began singing along to Signing Times songs! Read Rachel Coleman and Signing Time's story HERE!
Talk about taking life's lemons and making LEMONADE! Rachel Coleman's segments are on Nick Jr regularly. Rachel Coleman has been nominated for an Emmy and a Parent's Choice award! Please go to Rachel Coleman's website HERE to read about Leah, Lucy, and Laura! Very compelling!
Oh yea and the colored band-aids are so that the letters and signs can be clearly distinguished from each other! So if I MUST watch Nick Jr, with the Prince and Princess at least there is something catchy that I like! I love the song below!
I LOVE how the children are signing along with her!
Her daughter Lucy is in this video (in the wheelchair at about 1:42)
