University Of Phoenix DFW Alumni Mixer

On August 23, I attended a DFW Chapter University of Phoenix Alumni Networking Mixer (Yea say that tongue twister10 times fast!).  I waited before posting about it because I wanted to see how the aftermath would be.  You know how you go to events and everyone there is all excited about connecting, and people are saying things like... "I'll call you", or "We'll talk", or "Let's Connect", or "We should work on something"... etc, etc, etc.  But then a week after the event you get exactly ........ NOTHING!
So I waited. I waited to see exactly who would reach out, who would respond back, and what if anything they would say.

The event itself was very interesting. I like to people watch so watching the interactions were fun.  The set-up was very nicely done. The one thing I would have added would have been a nice, ornate glass jar or bowl for everyone to drop a business card into as they entered.  There was a sign in sheet but with the business cards you get an instant snap shot of the person, and their business.  The cards could have been utilized for so much more after the event.

The location was very nice. The event was held at the Sheraton DFW Airport Hotel and it is a lovely hotel. The lobby/lounge area is very nice with some extremely comfortable rocking chairs (I know because I was dropped off at 3pm and the event wasn't until 6pm, so I spent quality time with the lounge rockers LOL!!).  I even won a door prize! Anyone who has spent ANY time on this blog knows how much I ABSOLUTELY LOVE free stuff, so yea that was exciting! And it was a very nice prize too! A lovely Pierre Cardin pen set, Oh La La!

I did get the chance to meet some of the board members!
Cedric Alford - Board President
Ivy N. McQuain - VP of Communications
Loretta Howard - VP of Administration
Keokuk Domingo - VP of Events
Tammie Shipmon - VP of Alumni Engagement
Jeffery Delgado - VP of Technology

This mixer was the second since the forming of this new DFW Chapter of the University of Phoenix Alumni Association.  I heard that the first mixer, which was the inauguration of the new DFW Chapter Board had an attendance of about 40+ people.  The event last week had about 22 people in attendance. Hmmm, according to my records the DFW area has approximately 1082 graduates in 2011 and approximately 870 in 2012 thus far. So if you can see where I am going with this.... in the past 2 years there have been 1952 graduates and the Alumni mixer had 22 ALUMNI in attendance (that is like about 1.1%).  Between Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn I expected a better turnout.  Social media networking needs to be better utilized here.
Speaking of Social Media..... If YOU are a UOP Alumni in the Dallas/Fort Worth area you can connect with the DFW Chapter .........

So back to those connections. Out of the 22 people I have maintained a solid communication with 1.5 of them! Yea, so you are wondering how I got 1.5 right? Well I have been interacting with one on a pretty regular basis and there is another person who I have been in touch with and there is potential for more. So like I said 1.5!  I am keeping in mind that it is BACK TO SCHOOL time, and folks have young kids (Not me), jobs (Not me), and other obligations, so I will cut them some slack.
Our next alumni meeting will be on Thursday, September 27, 2012, from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. We'll see how this turn out is.
