On Thursday nights my Facebook news feed and my Twitter timeline are flooded with news about Scandal. According to TVLine.com, on this past Thursday night (1/10/16), Scandal hit "all-time highs, drawing 8.4 million total viewers (up 18 percent from its fall finale) and a 2.8 demo rating (up 17 percent and beating CBS’ Elementary by four tenths)".
So Let me tell you my thoughts and issues with the hit television show SCANDAL...
I like the show to a degree. There are some really good sub-plots going on that I really like. And THAT is what keeps me watching regularly (well if you call sitting in front of the DVR on Saturday watching an entire weeks worth of shows regular!).
If you liked movies such as, "Conspiracy Theory", "Murder At 1600", "Enemy Of The State", and even "Dave" then the sub-plots of the television show SCANDAL will be equally as enjoyable. I like them because I believe most of these plots (in the above mentioned movies AND this television show) are highly likely and plausible in today's society. I believe a lot of this USED to happen, HAS happened, and/or MAY happen! Besides movies, I read books with plots like this, so government LIES, TRICKERY, MISREPRESENTATIONS, and SCANDALS are not really a new concept for me to wrap my brain around. It CAN and probably DOES happen. I think the show's creator Shonda Rhimes is a very talented writer.
The reason I keep saying "sub-plots" is because to me the MAIN plot is the one thing I have the BIGGEST ISSUE with. INFIDELITY! But..... infidelity is not my only issue here. My issue is that people are casting the star of the show "Olivia Pope as a hero, role model, savior not because of what she does (lawyer, Champion of the hard cases, the Fixer, yea, yea, yea, I got that), but because she is in LOVE! Now love is fine, however this love is the love of a MARRIED MAN! To coin the phrase that Zack (my Facebook friend) used, she is a SIDE PIECE! Not hard to see Kerry Washington in this role if you consider her role as Nikki in "I Think I Love My Wife" hmmmm. Anyway, I understand that this is television and the show is for entertainment, but I just want people to remember that Olivia Pope is fully, deeply, heavily involved in an extramarital affair, with a man who has a pregnant wife! This should NOT be applauded!
Think for a minute... if this was YOUR sister, daughter, mother, or best friend and you knew she was involved with this man who is CLEARLY NOT going to leave his wife for her, what would you say?? I BET you would tell her, "FOOL, that dude is NOT leaving his wife for you so LET IT GO!". You would tell her, "Sit your nasty tail down somewhere, and get a man of your own"! Or you would tell her, "Stop being STUPID and DELUSIONAL, STOP waiting on his every call, and every word, because he will NEVER belong to YOU"! Or maybe it is just me. Maybe I am the only one who would tell someone that, who was making a fool of themselves over a married man! *shrugs shoulders*
The show SCANDAL offers eye candy in the form of Harrison (Columbus Short), who by the way is greatly UNDERUTILIZED in this role! But he is cute, yes that is one good looking Gladiator in a Suit!
I think Quinn is a waste of cloth, and Abby is pretentious and obnoxious, and not a lot of use. But surprisingly the two strongest sub-plots are Huck's story-line and Cyrus' story-line.
Huck (Guillermo Diaz)
is awesome as the tortured torturer,
and Cyrus (Jeff Perry) gives the show some much needed emotion as the
"I Run The Country From The Background Puppet Master"
who will do just about anything to stay in power!Once you strip away the affair with the President, Olivia's role is actually very boring and one-dimensional. Again, it could be just me because I have never been a Kerry Washington fan (she does wear some nice suits though). Eh, whatever.
Well, tomorrow is Saturday, so I will hit the play button on the DVR and see if Huck was saved and if Cyrus can handle the new President (because she is trying to pop his puppet strings!).
What do YOU think of the show SCANDAL??
Have a great weekend!
